"Potenza delle Donne" è un progetto  nato un po’ per caso. Un’agenzia di advertising mi chiese di occuparmi di fotografare donne della Basilicata, per poter creare un prodotto commerciale da vendere, un calendario per il 2015.

Cominciai a lavorare a questo quindi, senza nessuna pretesa artistica, ma con l’intenzione di portare a termine un lavoro nel migliore dei modi.

Quando si parla di Basilicata ed in particolar modo di donne della Basilicata, le immagini – che in modo ossessivo – tornano alla mente, sono sempre le stesse: contadine, casalinghe, donne che si occupano dei figli e della famiglia tutta la vita, anziane signore con le mani rugose legate ad una tradizione antica oramai più religiosa che pagana. Immagini molto belle, senza dubbio, anche il grande Cartier-Bresson ne fu affascinato in tempi non lontani.

Eppure, man mano che conoscevo le ragazze/donne/adulte che avrebbero preso parte a questo progetto commerciale, mi rendevo conto che in realtà in Basilicata, terra bellissima e dimenticata dove ci si aggrappa disperatamente alle tradizioni ed ai tempi antichi come se non ci fosse altro, come se questa terra non avesse molto altro da offrire se non ricordi sbiaditi e costumi popolari ingombranti delle rievocazioni storiche, le ragazze che conoscevo man mano che preparavo i set, non avevano nulla di ordinario. Non avevano nulla delle matrone vestite di nero o delle ragazze timorate in cerca di marito la domenica in chiesa.

Allora ho deciso di ampliare il progetto su cui mi avevano chiesto di lavorare, e di inglobarlo e di realizzare foto di donne che, con lo stereotipo di donna lucana, non avevano molto a che fare, pur dichiarandosi fiere di appartenere all’antica terra dei lupi.

Da questa riflessione nascono questi ritratti “convenzionali” di “donne poco comuni” in questa terra, che hanno anche dovuto lottare (più che in altre parti d’Italia forse) per continuare ad essere quello che sono. Bellissime donne poco convenzionali in una terra di tradizioni. 

 

 

 

 

 

"Potenza delle Donne" is a project born a little 'by chance. Advertising agency asked me to take  photograph of women from Basilicata, in order to create a commercial product to sell, a calendar for 2015.

I started working on this then, with no artistic pretensions, but with the intention of completing a job in the best way.

 

When we speak of Basilicata and especially women of Basilicata, the images - which obsessively - come to mind, are always the same: farmers, housewives, women who take care of children and the family all their life, elderly ladies with wrinkled hands tied to an ancient tradition now more religious than pagan. Very beautiful pictures, no doubt, even the great Cartier-Bresson was fascinated not long time ago.

Yet, as I knew the girls / women  who have taken part in this project, I realized that in reality in Basilicata, beautiful land and forgotten where we desperately clings to the traditions and the ancient times, as if there were no other more, as if the land had not much else to offer except faded memories and folk customs of bulkies historical reenactments, the girls I knew as I was preparing the sets, they had nothing ordinary. They had nothing of the matrons dressed in black or timorous girls looking for husbands to church on Sundays.

So I decided to expand the project on which I was asked to work, and to incorporate them and take pictures of women who, with the stereotype of woman Lucan, hadn't a lot to do, while fairsely declaring to belong to the ancient land of wolves.

From this reflection I gave birth to these portraits "conventional" to "unusual women" in this land, who have also had to fight (more than in other parts of Italy perhaps) to continue to be what they are. Beautiful women unconventional in a land of traditions.
